Who We Are
We are a small non-profit corporation which attempts to provide emergency help to those of Bexar County's chronically mentally ill who are in 'independent housing'. We are all-volunteer, chartered in October of 2002. We work out of our own homes, deliver to their homes, and serve about 270 households a year. Referrals come from the Center for Health Care Services, the V.A., and private providers; most funding comes from individual donors. Grants from St. Luke's Health Care Ministries help cover the cost of cleaning supplies. Cooperating groups include numerous churches, Merced Housing of Texas, the Assistance League, NAMI, and South San Community for Mental Health.
Why
Due to no government funding and disability checks not arriving for at least 30 days, or as long as 2 years, the clients are at risk for stress and anxiety disorders, as well as their children and pets.
What We Provide
1. Our "Welcome Basket" project provides cleaning supplies for one month, as well as small household items such as linens and dishes, to mentally ill people moving into private apartments. 2. Our furniture donation project occasionally distributes beds or other items of furniture. 3. With Merced's help, we may provide a small amount of storage for furniture of people being evicted. 4. In rare instances, we provide very small sums of cash for rent, boarding of pets, and other special needs.
What We Don't Provide
Food, clothes, medicine. If we are given these items, we pass them along to agencies which do handle them. Substance abuse cases. Dual diagnosis cases are accepted, but the client must have an Axis I diagnosis by a qualified mental health professional in order to be eligible.
Thanks for helping us help the mentally ill !
